5 Tips for a Low-Carb Brunch Experience

Brunch is probably your favorite meal of the week. A low-carbohydrate diet doesn’t have to ruin brunch. There are many low-carb menu options that take advantage of the benefits of fruits, vegetables, and eggs. Here are 5 low-carb breakfast tips!

Be nice to restaurant staff before we begin. You can ask them to help you with menus, and they will be your voice in the kitchen. If you’re not kind and respectful, they won’t be willing to help. Be a good person, get good service!

Low-Carb Brunch tip #1 – Low Carb Bubbly

We have to begin with drinks. Mimosas are the perfect brunch drink. While OJ is off-limits, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can have a dry afternoon. A glass of dry Champagne will do. Dry champagne is perfectly acceptable with a low carb diet. Instead of orange juice, try it with soda and orange slices. Add a few berries to make it a colorful and tasty addition. If you’re looking for a simple cocktail, mix it with your favorite seltzer water. You can add mint or rosemary to the glass for a little extra flavor. Remember to always use moderation!

Eggs Benny without the Bread – Low-Carb Brunch tip #2

I love eggs Benedict. It’s the creamy, zesty, hollandaise sauce, the beautifully runny, poached eggs, buttery salmon, or salty, ham. We have to stop the toast or muffin that’s usually piled high with all the adorably delicious toppings. But don’t despair! Ask your server to substitute the muffin for sliced tomato or mixed greens. Are you an avocado lover? You can ask if the avocado can be substituted for a muffin! You can still enjoy all of the great parts of Eggs Benedict, without having to sacrifice anything other than the empty carbohydrates. This hack is great and I have used it with success in many restaurants. Try it out!

Low-Carb Brunch Tip #3 – Omelettes Got You

I’m from the south so I love Wafflehouse. Waffles have been removed from my menu. Now I order a cheesesteak-topped omelet with jalapenos and substitute tomatoes for the hashbrowns. My son gets the raisin bread. But I have found that omelets make a delicious, large plate that is low-carb. Look for scrambles if omelets are not on the menu! Even scrambles served with potatoes are easily modified by adding more vegetables. Ask your server about the options.

Low-Carb Breakfast Tip #5 – Avoid the High-Carb Side Trap

The popular choices of potatoes and toast can quickly turn a low-carb brunch into a carb-laden mess. You can replace potatoes or toast by sliced tomato or mixed greens. Ask the server for a low-carb salad or soup instead of grits or oatmeal. Watch out for side dishes like yogurt and granola. They can be packed with sugar.

Some fresh fruit would also work. For a tasty, low-sugar option, ask your server which fruit is included in the fresh fruit. Berries are a great choice. Avocados are in vogue and many restaurants offer them as a substitute for carbs. Don’t forget that bacon, sausage and other meaty goodness make excellent low-carb side dishes!

Low-Carb Brunch tip #5: Appetizers for Mains

I enjoy a great appetizer menu. You can easily adapt chicken wings, charcuterie plates, or even spinach dips to make a low-carb, flavorful meal. Ask if you can substitute vegetables for the chips or crackers that come with appetizers. Ask if the wings on chicken are fried in batter or without any coating. If you like an app but don’t think it will be enough to make a meal, look at the side menu. Many restaurants will create a meal that you can mix and match. The goal of most restaurants is to sell food.

Here are my top 5 brunch tips. These are my favourite ways to get a satisfying meal without carbs, but with good fats. I haven’t yet found a place where I couldn’t make small changes like these to get a plate of food that was on plan. I hope they are helpful to you and that you have a great weekend. We love hearing about your brunch favorites!
